| Life in organizations inevitably involves interdependence, and interdependence often produces conflict. Hence understanding and managing conflict is an essential part of getting things done in organizations. Parties involved in conflicts face a choice between competitive and cooperative approaches: A competitive approach might produce the best possible result - or it might simply escalate the conflict. A cooperative approach might foster a valuable working relationship - or it might sweep the underlying problem under the rug. This course presents a variety of frameworks for analyzing conflicts and techniques for resolving them. Obstacles to effective resolution are examined. Methods of conflict resolution are also studied. The course places much weight on developing behavioral skills in conflict resolution. To that end, there is a heavy use of exercises and role-playing simulations of conflicts. |
